The population of cities in the period between the Civil War and the 1920s dramatically increased. During this period there were large waves of European immigrants from Ireland, Germany, and other regions who came to the US seeking a better life and often took up residence in American cities. In addition there was increased migration of African Americans into cities during this period following the ending of slavery. From the Civil War to the 1920s, U.S. cities saw a significant population increase driven by immigration, industrialization, and internal migration. Major cities like New York and Chicago expanded rapidly, with urban living becoming the norm by 1920 when more than half of Americans lived in cities. This period marked a pivotal change in American demographics, setting a foundation for the modern urban landscape.
